Well put. I’m just plain offended by the bad use of typography and the whole underlining bit. A fellow designer and I have lamented about the amount of poor design out there (at least when it comes to some websites we’ve run into) and have coined the term for amateur as DBN — meaning “Designed by Nephew.” No offense to the nephews out there who happen to professional designers.

P.S. Are crocs as comfortable as people say they are?

Good post and the photo sums it up perfectly. It's a question of taste and respecting the readers by not hitting them over the head with the obvious. Underlining is like a person prefacing the joke by saying
"I am telling you a funny joke so listen and respond accordingly, as instructed and on cue"

WE GET IT!!!! (also hate multiple explanation points)
(I would like to underline this for you but can't find my tools so. . .well, you get it)

Excellent post, and dead on target!

Underlines are so very 1994. Great post, Amy.

But David is right, the Crocks did match the poor lame guy's suit.

Thanks for making me laugh today with the background impetus for this post!

I'm so very glad I know you. ;o)

In the 80s, I used to match my bandana to my outfit. That still doesn't make it right.

Hey! No one seems to have noticed the most important point. His crocs match his shirt. He's coordinated!

Great tips! One of my favorite books that you recommended to me years ago is "The Non-Designers Guide to Design" by Robin Williams (not the comic). It is full of great, useful tips to dramatically improve the look of any piece. I would like to recommend that the lady who writes and "designs" (a term I will use loosely) my son's pre-school newsletter read that book! The newsletter is riddled with the faux pas you mention plus numerous others. It is so visually unappealing, I can barely read it. Hence my excuse why I never know what is going on at his school! I look forward to future posts on this subject.
